“Wait and see” verdict at Goods Yard Town Hall talks.

Llanelli Star, 15th October, 1966.

A two and a half hour conference was held at Llanelli Town Hall over the weekend to discuss the possible effects of British Rail’s closure of Llanelli goods yard. It was decided to await evidence of the effects on trade and industry.

Present at the conference was Llanelli’s M.P. Mr James Griffiths, and representatives of Llanelli Borough and Rural Councils, the Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Llanelli and District Trades Council, the National Union of Railwaymen and the Amalgamated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen. The Mayor, Ald. Harry Morris presided.

If the results received from industry and trades warrant it another conference may be called.

The Goods Depot closed on Friday of last week. From then all goods services for the Llanelli area  are based in Swansea from where lorries will provide the link.

Later Mr Griffiths says they were concerned primarily about the industrial situation, with special reference to redundancy. They were also concerned that services to industry and businesses should not be adversely affected. “What is also important is that changes should not adversely affect efforts that are being made to attract new industry to west Wales” added Mr Griffiths.
